What is the best advice you can give to a person who wants to write fiction professionally?

Write daily, no excuses.

Read far more than you engage in any other form of entertainment. Read everything, not just what you like most.

Totally master writing mechanics like grammar, punctuation, and usage. Two mistakes can mean rejection.

Never share your writing seeking praise.

Never share your writing online except at a password-protected forum for writers. (You give away first publication rights otherwise.)

Be open to criticism, acknowleging that it may sting, but can make you a better writer.

Submit your best, expecting nothing, and write another. Most often nothing is what you'll get.

Brace yourself for fierce competition, a lot of it from people who are better writers, or have better ideas.

Grow a thick skin. What is the best advice you can give to a person who wants to write fiction professionally?
Write everyday. If you want to make writing your job, you need to put in the hours. So make goals for yourself. I write at least a page a day, but I usually try to shoot for three. Or you can also set aside a few hours after dinner, before bed, after homework, etc., for your special writing time.

Also, read material from within the genre you want to write. This way, you can learn what publishers and agents look for. What is the best advice you can give to a person who wants to write fiction professionally?
Write every day.

Read non stop. When you read you see the format, you see what works and what doesn't, it'll improve your vocabulary, and it can inspire ideas for your novel. Also, it's fun. :D

Edit, nonstop. Your novel will never be perfect, but make sure to read, reread, proof, reread, proof, and then reread and don't for get to proof.

Know what the agent your sending your manuscript is looking for in the stories they accept. If you're writing romance don't send it to an agent that will only read fantasy.

Read up on writing world. Learn how to write a query. Learn how to format your story.

NEVER GIVE UP! People will reject you, it will suck, but anyone can get published with perseverance.
Write, rewrite, and keep writing. Everyday.
